Job Description / Primary Objective |
The City of Urbana (pop. 43,200) is pleased to offer two exceptional opportunities to support engineering initiatives for one of downstate Illinois' most innovative and progressive cities. In 2019, the City undertook a transformation reorganization of the Public Works Department that included uniting the Transportation and Drainage/Development sections of the Engineering Division into one functional team with broad range of experience and expertise. Moving forward with that reorganization, we are now looking for exceptional leaders to support the positive trends of collaboration and cooperation.
In addition to City Engineer, we are also currently accepting applications for Assistant City Engineer. This position offers the opportunity to gain valuable management experience in public sector engineering while progressing in your career path. The successful candidate will perform highly responsible engineering work of an administrative and technical nature in assisting in the directing of the activities of the Engineering Department. As a civil service employee, you will also enjoy the rights and responsibilities associated with positions with the Urbana classified service system. |

Position Requirements
Requirements for consideration include:
• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering;
• Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience, including experience planning and directing difficult projects and supervising the work of professional engineering staff;
• Licensure as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois or ability to obtain Professional Engineer license in the State of Illinois within six months of employment.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of computer aided design and drafting, land surveying and mapping, and Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.).

Compensation and Benefit Package
This position offers a competitive salary with an expected hiring range of $89,355 - $94,733 with the opportunity for growth. A comprehensive benefit package includes paid vacation, sick leave, holiday pay, outstanding health coverage options, tuition reimbursement, pension plan through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), an optional deferred compensation plan and a post-retirement medical savings benefit program.
