    Job Description / Primary Objective The City of Urbana, Illinois, (pop. 43,200) is pleased to offer two exceptional opportunities to support engineering initiatives for one of downstate Illinois' most innovative and progressive cities. In 2019, the City undertook a transformation reorganization of the Public Works Department that included uniting the Transportation and Drainage/Development sections of the Engineering Division into one functional team with broad range of experience and expertise. Moving forward with that reorganization, we are now looking for exceptional leaders to support the positive trends of collaboration and cooperation.

    In addition to Assistant City Engineer, the City is also accepting applications for City Engineer. This position offers the opportunity to provide effective direction, control, and management over key engineering functions, such as infrastructure engineering, construction management, and development review. The successful candidate will also be responsible for activities such as performing a full range of project management activities for multiple construction projects; serving as City Traffic Engineer; and providing effective leadership of the division by creating and promoting a positive, inclusive work environment. As an executive level position within the City, this position is subject to an annual appointment recommendation by the Mayor and confirmation by the City Council.
    Requirements (Education, Level of Experience, etc.) Position Requirements
    Requirements for consideration include:
    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
    • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience, including experience planning and directing difficult projects and supervising the work of professional engineering staff.
    • Licensure as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
    • Preferred attributes: master’s degree in a civil engineering or a closely related field and/or municipal civil engineering experience.

    Compensation and Benefit Package
    This position offers a competitive salary with an expected hiring range of $106,733- $124,776 with the opportunity for growth. A comprehensive benefit package includes paid vacation, sick leave, holiday pay, outstanding health coverage options, pension plan through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), an optional deferred compensation plan and a post-retirement medical savings benefit program.
