    Rice Architecture

    Job Title

    Assistant Professor of Architecture

    Job Location

    Houston, TX

    Job Status

Job Description / Primary Objective The Rice University School of Architecture invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of assistant professor of architecture with a focus on the scholarship and design of cities and built environments.

Rice Architecture is an innovative, well-resourced school that promotes the interrelationship of practice and scholarship. We are committed to supporting and advancing the voices of architects in academia and producing research and creative practice at the highest level. The unique size of our university offers an unparalleled environment for interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange, including with other schools and units on campus, such as the Kinder Institute for Urban Research. The school is interested in applicants with a clear line of inquiry who will contribute to the collective conversation of the faculty and the advancement of the fields of architecture and urbanism more broadly. We are particularly interested in historically underrepresented voices and welcome applicants whose work and lived experiences will expand our conversations, perspectives, and practices.

We seek outstanding design faculty who can teach across our undergraduate and graduate programs, including design studio, lecture courses, and seminars that advance our understanding of and engagement with contemporary cities and their communities. We welcome candidates with expertise and experience in the application of urban research and design to a wide array of environmental issues such as climate change, rapid urbanization, and global migration. Successful candidates will have the capacity to work across scales, connecting local conditions with regional, national, and global dynamics. They will also demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of research and design methodologies, to embrace issues such as resiliency, participatory design, policy, or community engagement. As the fourth-largest and most diverse city in the US, Houston is reflective of the most pressing challenges worldwide and an exciting laboratory for new forms of urban thought and design agency. Rice Architecture draws upon this unique context and Houston’s immense arts, culture, and industry, offering many opportunities for local and global engagement.
Requirements (Education, Level of Experience, etc.) This position is available beginning fall 2024. Applicants should hold, at a minimum, a Master of Architecture degree or its equivalent; additional qualifications may include professional licensure or an advanced research degree. Degree requirements must be fulfilled by July 1 of the year employment commences. Applicants with a commitment to design and creative practice are encouraged to apply. The final candidate will have exemplary teaching and professional experience, including a portfolio of inspiring and field-defining design work and/or body of scholarship. The deadline for applications is December 29, 2023 and the review of applicants will continue until the position is filled.

Applications must include a letter of interest with a brief overview of the candidate’s background, interests and approach to teaching and research or creative practice, including contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion; a curriculum vitae; a focused selection of work highlighting design, research, and writing; sample syllabi; and contact information for three references (up to 20 MB)
