    The Development Services Division of the Community Planning and Development Department administers Denver’s building, fire, and zoning codes through review, permitting, and inspection of all new development projects in Denver. Through each of these critical roles, Development Services helps to implement the city’s vision for an outstanding Denver.

Community Planning and Development plays a role in growing our world-class city, while keeping its beloved features intact. From the skyscrapers of the Central Business District; to the walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods of Stapleton; to the charming Victorian effects of the Baker district, the staff at Community Planning and Development works to make Denver a great place to live, work and play. The department's three primary functions are planning, permitting and inspections.

    This crucial role will have an impact throughout Denver by reviewing and evaluating construction documents for complex multifaceted projects involving the construction and renovation of buildings and facilities to ensure compliance to Building Codes and architectural standards for structures throughout the City and County of Denver.

    Key responsibilities will include:
    • Review and evaluate architectural construction documents submitted for approval utilizing applicable codes/standards/guidelines/laws, appropriate municipal ordinances, and construction and engineering standards, determine review fees, and authorize the release of approved documents for city permits
    • Check architectural plans and specifications and provide timely oral and/or written communication detailing design and/or construction deficiencies in plans and specifications
    • Interact with the public, professional design consultants, project managers, contractors, and elected officials to communicate permit application procedures and regulatory and code requirements and interpretations and negotiate for special considerations on unique and/or historical projects
    • Direct and participate in meetings regarding private development projects to assist in the development process, facilitate the timely approval and completion of projects, and resolve any problem areas
    • Assist inspectors with difficult or unusual code compliance issues and answer questions from inspectors about plan review comments
    • Cultivate, foster, and maintain positive working relationships with directors, managers, supervisors, employees, and other stakeholders to gain their cooperation and support on assigned projects/assignments
    • Participate in recommending and establishing policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and specifications and evaluate the effectiveness of existing methods, policies, procedures, and proposed local and national model code modifications and issues
    • Other duties as assigned (possibly code development, assisting with site development review, support the adaptive re-use of existing buildings, mentor and train junior staff, and evaluate performance based design)

    Our ideal candidate has/is:
    • Five years of professional architectural experience performing project design, code compliance, and/or construction management
    • Familiar with building systems, structures, technical specifications, and construction detailing
    • Experience evaluating, building life-safety performance, accessibility compliance, and thermal-envelope performance
    • Experience with a wide variety of commercial building projects
    • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
    • Ability to communicate effectively – verbally and in writing
    • Ability to multitask; works well under pressure; Strong attention to detail and highly organized
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
    • Experience using Bluebeam Revu preferred
    • ICC Building Plans Examiner B3 certification within six (6) months of hire (preferred, not required)
    Requirements (Education, Level of Experience, etc.) We recognize your time is valuable, so please do not apply if you do not have at least the following required minimum qualifications:
    • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or related field
    • Experience: Three (3) years of professional architectural experience performing project, design, and/or construction management work
    • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education
    • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements
    • Requires registration as an Architect by the Colorado State Board of Registration at the time of application
    • Registration as an Architect by another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement provided that the applicant has Colorado registration by the end of the probationary period
    • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
