    The Right-of-Way Services (ROWS) Survey Section has the full-time, unlimited City Surveyor position open. Strong leadership, innovative foresight, experience and knowledge in the field of Surveying is valued. The City and County of Denver honors equivalency using professional experience to substitute for a degree for this classification and position. The City Surveyor is one of the most important positions in Colorado, as you’ll work with many internal and external stakeholders as Denver grows, yet be responsible for the monument preservation and maintenance program.

    The Survey Section’s 30 professional and technical staff members provide land survey expertise to the Department of Transportation & Infrastructure, as well as other city agencies. The Survey team proactively reviews both private and city development projects, assists with land acquisition and real estate for all city departments including the review of subdivision plats and site plans, annexations, street vacations, easement dedications, land disposal, leases, and addressing. This position will be a leader reporting to the divisional Senior Engineer Manager. The City Surveyor is an integral part of leading the department’s team of surveyors and offers an opportunity for leadership growth and innovation.

    As Denver’s City Surveyor, duties will include:

    Lead the City and County of Denver Survey Office by planning, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of subordinates and assist with problem resolution
    Manage team leads who supervise field survey crews who create daily assignments and monitor and check their progress
    Manage the budget and revenues for Surveyor’s Office and work closely with the divisional director to ensure proper resources, equipment/supplies, and technology are in place to perform assigned responsibilities
    As a leader, direct the maintenance of official records, maps, and survey records
    Coordinate with other city agencies on requests for services and survey support
    Assist the Division director in making updates to annual business plan, revisions of programs, and appropriate team/individual goals
    Lead and direct staff who process and checks subdivision requests, plans, and survey records prepared by licensed professional land surveyors for technical and record information accuracy
    Oversee the staff who makes regular contacts with the general public, other departments, contractors, private surveyors, and outside organizations relative to municipal mapping and survey practices and procedures, and staff who prepare legislation to dedicate public right-of-way and approve subdivision filings
    Build relationships and represent DOTI in both internal department meetings and those with external stakeholders

    About You

    Our ideal candidate will have:

    Extensive experience supervising a surveying team in a management role
    Skills with innovation using data points as well as use of traditional surveying technique, and demonstrated adeptness and understanding to the changes in the field of Surveying
    Experience working with municipality government structure as a representative and build relationships external stakeholders
    Ability to demonstrate strong communication skills both written and verbal

    Education: Bachelor's Degree in Surveying, Engineering, Science or a related field

    Experience: Five (5) years’ experience managing the surveying functions and professional Land Surveyors

    License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application

    Licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) issued by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors at the time of application

    Licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) by another state will be accepted in lieu of this requirement providing the applicant is licensed by the State of Colorado by the completion of the probationary period

    Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment

    Education/Experience Equivalency: Two (2) years of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education
